I’m not a huge fan of Wilco. I mean, I don’t hate them, and I really like a lot of what they do. I’m on record though as saying that I’d trade all the Son Volt and Wilco albums in the world for more Uncle Tupelo. And nothing has really changed that.
The other day I saw this Wilco/Popeye crossover image and wondered what it portended, but didn’t think too much of it.
But then today, I saw this video posted over on Chicagoist and I fell kind of in love with it. I have a great big old warm fluffy feeling for Wilco right now. Jeff Tweedy, you get me. Popeye cartoons are one of the things that I watched all the time growing up that you just don’t see too much anymore. And I guess the same is probably true for Tweedy, who is of an age with me.
It’s not entirely convincing, but it has a lot of the feel and charm of the classic black & white Popeyes, with the repetitive movements, etc. A few more pops/flickers and some nearly incomprehensible mumbling might put it over the top. But it’s pretty great as is. And the song? Well, I like it. But it’s no Anodyne. Enjoy!
