I really liked this movie, an interesting retelling of the story of Fistful of Dollars. It was a genre-crossing story combining elements of the Western and the mob movie. Although it moved slowly at times, it's great; vintage Bruce, the loner tough guy playing both sides and ending up on top.

Incidentally, I recently saw another retelling of this same story, the loner coming to a town where two rival gangs are both holing up, and playing both sides while actually pursuing his own ends. This one was a bizarre science fiction movie starring that king of "B" sci-fi movies, Rutger Hauer. In it he played a robot in a humanity-less postwar wasteland. He comes to a town where two rival robot gangs are both searching for a secret cache of weapons. I wish I remembered what it was called. It was a fun movie but, of course, it's not what I'm supposed to be writing about.

Last Man may be the quintessential Bruce role, except perhaps for the lack of humor. This guy is stoic beyond belief, quiet and unassuming until the chips are down, and then deadly and efficient.

More on this movie later.
